Jersey Proud: Long Branch’s John Henry Turpin was Navy’s first Black chief petty officer
Long Branch native John Henry Turpin was the United States Navy’s first African American chief petty officer. A Navy diver, Turpin even also helped to recruit African Americans for the Navy in World War II.
