How to avoid getting burned by a third-party energy provider:
- Research the company’s complaint history with your state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
- Check out the company’s rates: They should be posted on their website. Make sure they’re actually cheaper.
- Find out if the rate is fixed or variable. Variable rates can change each month, sometimes by a lot.
