Bronx residents rejoiced as the city and state announced a $200 million investment as part of the ‘Together For Kingsbridge Vision’ Plan.
The investment comes after a nine-month-long community-led process that engaged 4,000 Bronx residents in the ongoing conversation of what to use the massive space for.
In September, private partners will hear directly from the community what they are looking for in the armory’s redevelopment. By the end of 2023, Gov. Kathy Hochul says that private partners will be engaged, and the plan is to decide how to use the armory by the end of 2024.
“We have been slow tracking for far too long,” said Hochul. “We can have vocational training, small business enterprises, arts and cultural events… there’s no limit to what we can do in this amazing space.”
Adams says that the plan could create around 2,000 jobs. Most recently, the armory was used as a temporary food distribution center during the COVID-19 pandemic and a place for those impacted by the Twin Parks fire to store supplies.
