Some
minority-owned businesses in New York City that are struggling due to the
COVID-19 pandemic are getting relief through a grant program.
The
Local Initiatives Support Corporation, or LISC NYC, helped pay bills and keep
staff on board for businesses that would have otherwise had to close, such as
the
Hip Hop Closet in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
The
business, which sells jewelry and clothing, is one of 100
minority-owned businesses that received $10,000 and other support services from
LISC NYC.
Valerie
White, the executive director of
LISC NYC, says giving businesses support is
especially important.
"Black,
brown, Latinx businesses have been going out of business at a rate much higher
than other businesses, so we want to be sure that we're providing additional
support for those communities," she says.
