Ahmet Kirambay has been in the restaurant business for a long time, but always dreamed of bringing a piece of his Turkish hometown to his adopted country, so he opened Rana Fifteen on 4th Avenue and Union Street in Park Slope to accomplish that.
On Monday, he heard the news of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that killed and injured tens of thousands in parts of Syria and Turkey. He learned that his family was safe, but says he was immediately looking for ways to help.
He decided to turn his restaurant’s usual weekend brunch into a charity event for this weekend. It’s taking place Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 100% of this weekend’s proceeds will be donated to the Bridge to Turkey Earthquake Relief Fund.
“Hopefully we raise enough money and we’re going to send over there,” said Kirambay. “I will be happy if I hear somebody got a blanket, or shoes.”
Reservations are limited to one hour per party, and while rescue and recovery efforts in Turkey are still going, Kirambay hopes the community will come together to help relieve some of the pain his people are facing.
