After more than a year of planning, organizers are putting the finishing touches on what they hope will be one of Long Island’s largest World Cup celebrations.

LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University will host a free public watch party for the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on Friday, bringing together soccer fans from across the region for a day of entertainment and activities.

Crews have spent the past several days transforming the stadium into a fan festival featuring multiple viewing screens, interactive games, youth soccer activities, food and family-friendly attractions.

Third Eye Blind will perform before the match begins.

Officials say the event is an opportunity to bring the excitement of a global event to Long Island and create a shared community experience around the world’s most-watched sporting event.

Admission is free, but organizers say tickets are limited.
