As gas prices continue to rise across New York City, an expert has tips on how you can save at the pump.
Benjamin Preston, a member of the automotive team at Consumer Reports, says one way to save is to see if the gas station offers a cheaper price on the cash option.
He also recommends checking out different locations, which can be done with sites like GasBuddy or checking out News 12’s Pump Patrol.
Preston says these tools especially help if you are commuting in the tri-state.
“Jurisdictional boundaries can make a big difference in how much gas costs, if it's on state lines or maybe in a different county, because states and municipalities tax gasoline differently,” he says.
Sometimes paying with a credit card, even if you are paying more, can have its benefits.
“You can get those deals on your credit card where you get rewards points or maybe you get a cash back,” Preston says.
Preston also points out what gas you are putting in your car matters.
"Definitely that premium fuel issue is a big one…it doesn't make your gas mileage better,” he says. “Now some high-performance cars do need premium, you can just check on your fuel door. And while you're at it, check your tire pressure."
Underinflated tires can lower gas mileage, Preston says.
