A public lottery now taking place for Baldwin Commons, a 33-unit affordable housing development located at 785 Merrick Road in Baldwin.

Baldwin Commons, located on 755 Merrick Road, offers one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, as well as several on-site amenities.

The four-story development in the heart of downtown Baldwin also includes parking for families.

Local officials say the new building is within walking distance to public transit, supermarkets, the library and other businesses.

"I have two kids who are in their 30's now, but it would have been wonderful if there was apartment housing like this back then," says Robert Weisser, of the Baldwin Civic Association.

A public lottery is open now until the April 8. Winners will be chosen on April 22.

Baldwin Commons is slated to be completed in June of this year.
