Residents gathered Saturday to participate in a 5K honoring a fallen NYPD detective and lieutenant.
The Lt. Thomas Clesse 5K in named after a police officer who served in the NYPD for nearly 35 years before passing away from brain cancer in 2002.
Participants have continued to keep Clesse's spirit alive with each installment, but this year, the event specially honored Detective Miosotis Familia, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in July.
On Saturday, police officers from the 49th Precinct presented Familia's children with a check for more than $1,100.
Officers say Familia followed in Clesse's footsteps in representing what it means to be a servant to the people.
The annual 5K, which also commemorates lives lost during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, is now in its 16th year.
