One person is in critical condition after a fire tore through a six-story apartment building in Longwood, injuring three people and sending firefighters racing against the clock to rescue a trapped resident.
The fire broke out late Thursday morning, just before 2 p.m. at an apartment building on Rogers Place. Dramatic video shows firefighters forcing their way inside and breaking down an apartment door as smoke poured through the building.
“I seen glass like fallen from my window, and I was like, ‘Oh, it definitely must be a fire,’” said Zaniya, who lives on the first floor.
Zaniya said she watched in shock as firefighters rushed into the building and extended ladders toward the flames, which officials say were coming from a fifth-floor apartment.
“I got bad anxiety, so I didn’t want the smoke to get me next,” she said.
Fire officials say the blaze was brought under control in under an hour, but not before three people were hurt. Two firefighters were treated for injuries, and the man who lived in the apartment where the fire started was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
“He looked bloody and kind of burned around his forehead and head,” said Lynel Parsons, who lives on the sixth floor.
Parsons said he ran outside and watched as first responders worked desperately to save the man’s life.
“I was just hoping that he was OK,” he said.
Neighbors say the man lived alone and mostly kept to himself but was well known for his kindness.
“He will always hold the door for you - very respectful,” Zaniya said.
Fire marshals sifted through the charred remains of the apartment, working to determine what caused the fire.
