An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after a traffic stop turned into a shooting Sunday night in the Bronx.
Police say at around 8 p.m., they saw a back Jeep driving through several red lights going northbound on Boston Road. The Jeep stopped at a light on East 165th Street and officers drove ahead of the Jeep and blocked it with an unmarked police car while another unmarked car stopped behind it.
Police say both cars had their warning lights on. As one of the officers approached the Jeep, the car reportedly backed up and sped toward one of the officers who then shot at the Jeep, striking the driver in the head. The three other people who were in the Jeep were taken to the 42nd Precinct.
The unidentified driver is now in critical condition. Two other officers were taken to the hospital.
During a press conference, police said their policy is to not shoot at a moving vehicle unless something other than the car is being used as a weapon. Body cameras carried by the officers are currently being reviewed as the investigation continues.
