As the city continues to mourn the loss of a 1-year-old killed by gun violence, new details have been released about the man in police custody.
News 12 is told the person of interest is in custody in connection to the death of 1-year-old Davell Gardener Jr., who was shot and killed earlier this week outside a cookout.
Police tells News 12 two men had approached a group on Madison Street last Sunday, shooting into a crowd of people, injuring three men and killing the toddler.
The community over the past few days has held vigils and marches, demanding justice for the 1-year-old. The Sergeant Benevolent Association also is offering $16,000 for an arrest from this incident.
Police say 25-year-old DeShawn Austin has been charged for murder and criminal possession of a weapon, in relation to an incident dating back to March in front of 566 Nostrand Ave. Media reports say he is the man who was brought into police custody for questioning Thursday in relation to Sunday night’s shooting.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea says it’s the NYPD's mission to bring those responsible in recent shootings to justice.
"I can tell you just since Monday we have had 13 arrests in shootings, just like this week. Now these incidents didn't occur this week, 13 arrests as recently as last night," says Commissioner Shea.
No arrests have been made at this time in relation to the toddler’s death.
