Police tape sectioned off the intersection of Grand Concourse and East Burnside Avenue after a deadly shooting Thursday morning.
Investigators say they responded to a call of an assault at 2151 Grand Concourse at around 2:35 a.m.
There they found a man shot in the chest and groin. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital but did not survive.
Crime Scene Unit investigators canvassed the area, laying 10 evidence markers throughout the Grand Concourse. In front of a building at 2150 Grand Concourse, a trail of blood surrounded a few bottles of non-alcoholic beverages. It's unclear if the drinks belonged to the victim or the gunman.
Neighbors walking around the crime scene were surprised by the deadly shooting. Many were forced to wait for the bus on the street, as the Grand Concourse and Burnside Avenue bus stop remained closed.
"We don't know what could've caused that gunshot,” said Tanya, a neighbor.
She said she has been living in the area for years and always remains cautious, especially late at night.
"Just have to be careful when you walk down the street,” she said.
As the investigation continues, police have not shared the victim's identity or who they are searching for.
