9h agoA new collaboration between a Marine organization and Kingsborough Community College is looking to inspire students on a future in the growing maritime field.
The organization Bio Boat is kicking off its summer program Youth Engagement Summer Stem at Sea, also known as “YESSS." It aims to give the 178 participating students a chance to learn the skills and knowledge required for a maritime career, whether it be in marine biology or maritime technology.
“Some have an idea on what the water is, but they have no idea what the industry is,” said Capt. John Nappo of Kingsborough Community College. “So, to get them in the level they are in the YESSS program is very important for recruitment for years to come.
Assembly members Jaime Williams and Stacey Pheffer-Amato secured a $100,000 grant for the program, which is helping students combine experiences in the lab and classroom with out-to-sea journeys for hands-on learning.
