Mayor Eric Adams was in Harlem Sunday to announce a new program aimed to support mental health providers in New York City.
Mayor Adams announced a student loan forgiveness program for behavioral health practitioners.
This is in an effort to support an ongoing shortage of mental health professionals nationwide.
The program will be for employees and new hires in exchange for a three-year commitment to the public sector.
Student loans are part of the reason why many health care providers chose to work in the private sectors.
News 12 is told the program is being funded by a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor. It will fund the program for the first year or until the money runs out.
