Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced an additional $22 million to go toward citywide efforts to combat the opioid crisis.

The mayor and first lady Chirlane McCray made the announcement Monday in Staten Island -- one of the boroughs hit hardest by widespread prescription drug abuse.

The new services call for expanding inpatient programs at hospitals, establishing a "specialized training institute" by this spring, expanding crisis response services and distributing 5,000 overdose-reversal kits to affected homes to be handed out by the FDNY.

De Blasio says the city is making strides toward lowering the number of opioid-related deaths.

"Now it is time to go on the offensive; it's time to fight it back," he says.

City health leaders say the number of prescription-related deaths from 2016 to 2017 has stabilized instead of increasing. They say they anticipate the new measures will save as many as 400 lives by 2022.
