If you think the Bronx and the rest of the city are crowded now, Mayor Bloomberg (R-NYC) might have some bad news for you. Bloomberg is estimating an additional 1 million people will join Brooklyn and the rest of New York City in the next quarter-century. He says now is the time to do something about it. The mayor is creating a new agency known as the Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. The agency will focus on several goals to prepare for 9 million people by 2030. The goals include making sure everyone is within a 10-minute walk of a park, cleaning up contaminated land and opening 90 percent of waterways for recreation.Mayor Bloomberg also wants New York City to have the cleanest air of any city in the nation.
