Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced Thursday morning that Brooklyn-born educator David Banks will be the next New York City schools chancellor.
Banks is a longtime city educator who founded Eagle Academy, a network of public schools for boys. Banks delivered a speech at P.S. 161 alongside Adams.
UFT released a statement soon after saying:
"David Banks is an educator who cares deeply about children. We have worked well with David in the past, and we look forward to continuing that relationship as he takes on the challenge of running 1,600 schools still suffering from the effects of the pandemic," said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers.
Banks would become the first appointment by Adams in his new administration.
He'll have oversight of the largest school district in the country, which comes with a budget of $38 billion.
