Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday that crime on subways has significantly decreased.

Mayor Adams says transit crime has gone down by nearly 27% over the last four weeks. He added there has not been an increase in crime since more cops were put at subway stations back in January.

Authorities spoke on whether technology like security cameras took part in this decrease.

“The question was do you think it's helping reduce crime? Yes. Absolutely. 100%," said Michael Kemper, NYPD chief of Transit. "This is a topic that's near and dear to us in the NYPD. Again, this is technology also that didn't exist just a few years ago and certainly with Chairman Lieber and him and his team at the MTA, we talk about this all the time."

Brooklyn residents told News 12 they ride the subway every day and haven't seen a difference.

“Subways are definitely getting a lot more dangerous," said one resident of Bushwick. "The MTA is doing as much as they possibly can in order to fix it, but I guess they could just up security could probably do something about it.”

NYPD officials say they will regularly do random bag checks in conjunction with state officials and the National Guard.

He also shared that in this week alone, transit crime is down 44.4%.
