Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to veto a bill that would require the translation of school documents into the nine most commonly spoken languages in the Bronx and the city.

The City Council voted in December for the translation bill. However, a spokesperson for Bloomberg says translating documents would duplicate the efforts of the education department. Critics of the bill say the cost would exceed $20 million and would discourage people from learning English.

Supporters of the translation bill say it would allow parents to become more involved in schools. They also say it would help parents in the process of learning English. The City Council thinks it will have the 34 votes necessary to override a veto by the mayor. Bloomberg has until January 20 to decide on the bill.
