The PlaNYC climate plan is part of the city’s latest long-term strategic initiative to tackle ongoing climate change issues. The 181-page report for the plan is the product of over 35 NYC agencies, outlining a slew of initiatives including climate budgeting, creating green jobs, zoning changes, a new Bureau of Coastal Resilience and more charging areas for electric vehicles.
“We are going to reshape our relationship with energy, how we generate it, how we use it, how we store it and how we pay for it,” said Adams.
The city’s plan includes setting up renewable energy installations, like the new solar panels atop of Sheepshead Bay High School, across as many city-owned buildings as possible. They’re also working on a pilot program that would fund solar panels for 3,000 low-income homeowners in communities disproportionately impacted by climate change.
The plan comes as the city still faces financial issues, and the city says it has created a task force to secure both state and federal grants to fund these programs.
