The country's biggest medical waste management company is trying to renew a permit at its Port Morris facility in the Bronx, but its drawing some concern by members of the community.

Residents say they became worried about the company Stericycle after they heard about its Utah location having problems. Utah officials say the site is facing criminal charges for complaints of endangering the health of nearby residents and fouling the air.

"If they're doing that there, what's to say they're not doing it here. This community can't stand one more ounce of treating of waste, processing of waste or transferring of waste," said Mychael Johnson, of the Bronx Council of Environmental Quality. "It seems we're all-things waste here in the South Bronx and things need to change."

Members of Community Board 1 questioned the company's record just last month. They said they are concerned that pollutants from the Port Morris plant could make the South Bronx air pollution problem even worse.

Although the Port Morris center is located in an area zoned for heavy industry, community board members argue that the site is just two blocks from private residences, and three blocks from the South Bronx School of International Cultures and the Arts.

Stericycle responded to concerns in a statement, saying they are not planning to expand the Port Morris location or increase truck traffic. They also promised that the groundwater will not be affected.

Community board members raised their concerns about the plant renewing its permit Tuesday night during a question and answer session with Stericycle at Hostos Community College.
