Members of the GLOW Club in the South Bronx are set to take part in one of the biggest days in the program's history as they get set to speak to an international audience at the United Nations.
Frances Herrera, the program's coordinator, decided she wanted to help girls in the South Bronx by creating a safe space for them after school. Herrera started the GLOW Club four years ago with just five members.
A year after starting the program, the nonprofit organization Global G.L.O.W. got involved and gave the small group a chance to grow.
Program coordinators say there's a need for the GLOW Club in schools to help empower girls and give them a place where they can express their feelings.
"We pretty much talk about self-advocacy, we try to develop them as people, we talk about their communities and ways to build their communities to make them better," says Herrera.
The group will speak at the United Nations on Saturday.
