Migrant families who are seeking asylum are now taking refuge by sheltering at the Sunset Park Rec Center and at McCarren Park.
This comes after local elected officials released a statement on Thursday, stating that Mayor Eric Adams informed them that McCarren Park and the Sunset Park Rec Center would begin housing asylum seekers as there are 56,000 migrants in the city's shelter system.
A Parks Department source told News 12 that the migrants began to arrive on Thursday night to Sunset Park, and that some are already inside the rec center. News 12 has learned from staff at the rec center that the people there have shower access, medical help and other resources available to them.
Officials say that they have seen lots of positive response from the local community. There is an active police presence at the rec center. Only the pool remains open for New York City residents at this time, as all other parts of the rec center are closed.
