Minimum wage in New York City is going up starting Jan. 1, jumping up to $16 per hour.
The minimum wage rise will impact Long Island and Westchester as well, and the minimum wage is set to see a second increase of 50 cents in 2025. It is expected to reach $17 per hour by 2026.
“After we saw what happened in the pandemic, after we’ve seen this hyperinflation and rise of costs of goods and everything… we said, minimum wage has to go up again,” said Assembly Member Kenny Burgos, one of many elected officials who pushed for this pay bump in the latest state budget.
The gradual increase of minimum wage is done for a reason – to avoid that hyperinflation and to allow employers time to adjust.
“Some employers are a bit hesitant when it comes to increasing these costs, but the reality is we need a workforce that is supported,” said Burgos. "If you're not getting that rate, you need to report your employer and speak with the Department of Labor, you can also speak with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection of New York City.”
The wage includes fast food workers.
Tipped food service workers and tipped service employees are on a different pay scale.
Home care aides are seeing a separate bump in pay to $18.55 per hour.
