An unusual search is underway in Orange County for a missing marsupial that has evaded police capture before.

A wallaby named Rocco escaped from Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary in town late last week after its owners said a repair person accidentally left a gate open.

"He was last seen Saturday night going into those woods," said Goshen Town Police Officer James Post. Video captured the last time Rocco was seen hoping down Gate Schoolhouse Road.

"Wallabies and kangaroos aren't native to the area, so it's kind of unique that we have a kangaroo running around," Post added.

The marsupial also escaped for a few hours last year. The animal's owners sent News 12 pictures of Rocco in hopes someone spots him.

Rocco's owners said he's not dangerous but is skittish and will run away. He likes bananas, sweet potatoes and wheat bread, which were left out for him after a search turned up empty-handed.

Rocco is about 3 1/2 feet tall and weighs roughly 40 pounds.

Police said anyone who sees him can try to lure him back with his favorite foods and then call Goshen Town Police at 845-294-9555 for help to safely take him in.

"We are experienced in catching Rocco. We've done it before and will do it again. Goshen police always come through," Post said.
