A 32-year-old moped driver was killed after colliding with an MTA bus in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx Wednesday, according to police.
Investigators say the victim, identified by friends as Andy Peralta, was riding his moped the wrong way down a one-way street when he crashed head-on into a BX28 bus along West Mosholu Parkway just after 5 p.m.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and attempted life-saving measures before transporting Peralta to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Eyewitness Jean Molina described the moments after the crash as chaotic.
“There was a lot of blood right away — they were rushing him to the hospital,” Molina said. “He came in hot… it was an ugly crash.”
Video from the scene shows the front windshield of the bus shattered and the victim’s moped was destroyed. A delivery bag believed to belong to the driver was also seen at the scene.
The bus driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Residents say the crash is a stark reminder of ongoing safety concerns in the area near Tracey Towers.
“I’ve seen enough people get hurt… I don’t want to see anymore,” one neighbor said.
Family members of the bus driver told News 12 she is shaken but trying to stay strong following the crash.
The incident marks at least the second deadly crash involving a delivery driver in the Bronx in less than a month.
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate.
