There are plans in place to build two eight-story, mixed-use affordable housing buildings on East 211th and East 212th streets in Williamsbridge.
The site is a block away from the Gun Hill Road subway station and will create 170 units for low-income families.
The project, named Williamsbridge Gardens, will offer a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom family apartments.
Residents of the building will be able to take advantage of a community room, a computer lab, children's library, laundry rooms and a rooftop space.
Building officials say several of the units will be filled by formerly homeless families with on-site services provided by the non-profit Center for Urban Community Services.
"I think it's a good use of space. Why would we leave it empty when we can house people who need help?" says Williamsbridge resident Priscilla Suero.
The project is still in predevelopment stages, and there's no word yet on exactly when the buildings will be completed.
