More BX, city kids dying in wake of Nixzmary Brown abuse case
Despite an expensive overhaul of the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) after Nixzmary Brown's death, published reports claim more children are dying in the Bronx and across the city.According to a city newspaper, between January 1 and November 30, 2006, 40 children died due to suspected abuse. In 2005, 25 children died due to suspected abuse compared to 36 in 1998. ACS counters only five of the 40 cases in 2006 are confirmed as abuse; 35 have yet to be determined.
The city spent $600 million to improve the troubled ACS agency, which is in charge of protecting city children. Officials say more caseworkers were hired and caseloads were reduced after 7-year-old Nixzmary's death in January 2006. Her mother and stepfather are awaiting trial. ACS also says more New Yorkers are reporting abuse.
