More than 70 gas stations around New Jersey dropped their prices on Friday in an effort to show drivers how much money they could save if New Jersey were to provide a self-serve option.

The gas stations are all part of the coalition Fuel Your Way NJ. They dropped the price of gas by 15 cents. The group says that New Jersey drivers could save as much as 10-25 cents per gallon if the state would allow a self-serve option.

The Motorist Fueling Choice and Convenience Act was introduced in the state Assembly in February. It would allow gas stations the option of offering self-serve gas, while still requiring stations with more than four dispensers to continue to offer full-service gas pumps.

"We don't have an employee to pay at that moment. Secondly, the workers' compensation drops tremendously because the gas station attendant’s workers' compensation insurance are the highest in the market because they feel it's a risk,” says Fouad Kashouty, owners of the Exxon Gas Station on 12th Street in Jersey City. “All the savings will be passed to consumers."

Gas station owners also say another reason to offer self-serve is that they can't find employees to fill positions. Some of the gas station owners say they offer $20 an hour for the position and still can't fill them.

Gas prices are currently at record-highs in New Jersey. AAA says that the average price for a gallon of gasoline is at $4.50 for regular.
