In Kingsbridge Heights, P.S. 95 physical education teacher Chris Acastio is giving his students more than just lessons in the classroom.
His players call him Coach Acastio. He found his purpose through his students and became the coach of Storm’s softball team.
His journey has been far from easy. After losing his sister, surviving stomach cancer in college and being paralyzed just two years ago from spinal stenosis caused by degenerative disc disease, he continues to live by the same lesson he teaches his students - to never give up.
To keep showing up for his team, Coach Acastio turns to DonorsChoose, a nonprofit platform where teachers share what their classrooms need, and anyone can help.
His most recent project was fully funded, giving P.S. 95’s sports teams brand new sweaters and a boost of pride.
For him, it’s not just about winning games. From helmets to bats to nets, he is making sure his players have the resources they need. Now he is hoping to get them new uniforms in time for the state championships.
