Gov. Kathy Hochul made a quick appearance at the Morris Park Library on Thursday to announce that the neighborhood will be getting $20M from the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative. This marks the first time since 2015 that anywhere in the Bronx has received money from the program, which is usually split in to two $10 million grants. "It's a huge win for the Bronx," said Borough President Vanessa Gibson. "It's a huge win for job growth and economic development." Gibson says the area's application included over 30 projects, which will include upgrading infrastructure and street areas, adding park space and installing art. Local officials expect to see a major boom in business once the Morris Park Metro North station opens, and Rob Walsh, the president of the Bronx Economic Development Corporation says these are about "making it a memorable place," predicting that "those projects that are going to take the Bronx to a whole new level." There still needs to be a review process to decide exactly what projects are funded, but Gibson promises that they will be using every penny of the $20 million.
