The Morris Park Community Association says they are launching an overnight neighborhood patrol to protect local businesses targeted by criminals.
Guardian Global Services, a private security company, will now be present and on patrol when the clock strikes midnight.
This comes as crime throughout the city increased 30% compared to this time last year.
Residents and community board members like Yahay Obeid believe the new patrol is necessary for everyone’s safety. "We've gotten to the point where we have to take matters into our own hands,” said Obeid. "This past year, we've had 12 businesses broken into here in Morris Park and Van Nest. We've had five cars stolen in five consecutive days."
These incidents led the Morris Park Community Association and the Yemeni American Association to seek the help of Guardian Global Services.
"We're going to let him or her know that we're here, we're going to make noise with our sirens and we're going to then contact the police,” said Bahir Mustafa, CEO of Guardian Global Services.
For just $100 a month, businesses can sign up to be added to their list. In turn, a security agent will drive by up to 40 times a night.
