Mosquitoes carrying the potentially fatal West Nile virus have been found in Throgs Neck, health officials recently confirmed. The City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said a pool of mosquitoes in the 10465 zip code tested positive for the virus. Officials plan to spray pesticide in the area as a precaution. They stress no human cases have been found in the Bronx.
The West Nile virus, while typically not serious, can be deadly to the young and elderly.
Experts recommend people use insect repellent and patch up any window screens that have holes. Officials also say standing water should be removed as soon as possible. Residents who find dead birds, which sometimes carry the virus, are urged to contact 311.
