An in-school COVID-19 vaccination event at the Mott Haven Academy Charter School was held on Tuesday.
Rocio Galvin has four kids at the school in grades 5-8. She's relieved to finally get them all vaccinated at the same time, surrounded by familiar faces.
"It would make a difference if every school would do it. I didn't have to go nowhere, I didn't have to make an appointment, I didn't have to walk in, they were in school and we're done," Galvin said.
An estimated 200 received the vaccine.
It was the third vaccine event at the school with one major difference: This time, they also administered the pediatric Pfizer doses for kids 5-11.
According to the state Health Department, only 36.7% of Bronx kids 5 to 11 have at least one shot -- the lowest overall.
Executive director of the charter school Jessica Nauioka said the event was a more joyful school experience for kids.
"Families making the decision to get students vaccinated helps kids stay in school more often and for longer periods of time," Nauioka said.
Kids who go the first shot will come back on March 8 to receive their second dose.
The school said it will continue to do events like this as long as the need continues.
