Fiesta de la Cruz is a centuries-old holiday celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Mott Haven's Puerto Rican community celebrated with music, traditional food, and prayers.
The group had intended to celebrate on Sunday, but the rainy weather forced them to reschedule. Nevertheless, spirits were high on Monday and community members said the holiday is a way to keep Puerto Rican traditions alive.
Community members also said Fiesta de la Cruz honors the indigenous, African, and Spanish ancestry of Puerto Ricans.
