Tenants in Mount Eden are taking their landlord to court, claiming they are being forced out of their apartments because of their HIV status.
Susan Guthridge, 56, has been living with HIV for 30 years. She says it's not the first time that she has been discriminated against and asked to leave an apartment.
Guthridge is one of several tenants suing the landlord of the building located at 1555 Grand Concourse for housing discrimination.
Lawyer Johanna Ocana is with Bronx Legal Services. She filed the suit on behalf of the tenants and claims since the property was purchased last year the new landlord has been reluctant to work with programs that sublease to people living with the disease.
"This is a case of discrimination based on HIV status," says Ocana.
The tenants say the purpose of their federal lawsuit is not just to fight to stay in their apartments, but also to send a message to landlords who discriminate.
