Mount Holly has canceled plans to host an Independence Day celebration next month, citing security concerns.

In a joint statement, police and township officials said they have been monitoring "local and regional events throughout New Jersey" to assess which events were canceled due to "alarming violence."

Officials have also been taking note of towns that have decided to move forward with their July 4 events but with increased security.

"With our spectators and vendors' safety top of mind, we could not enact a viable, actionable solution in such a short period of time to alleviate our security concerns without incurring additional, significant costs to the township and our residents," the joint statement says.

Officials have indicated which incidents in New Jersey have raised concerns.

In the statement, police and township leaders say they understand that the cancellation is disappointing and expressed gratitude for those who have supported events in previous years. There is no word yet on whether the celebration will be rescheduled for a later date.
