Members of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) met Wednesday to discuss how to handle the union?s recent rejection of their proposed contract. The MTA has asked a state board to convene a panel that would have the power to impose a new contract on the Transport Workers Union Local 100 (TWU). The contract dispute led 33,000 city transit workers to go out on strike last month. Officials for the TWU said the union opposed binding arbitration. They also vowed to do everything to resist implementation of a contract that didn't meet their demands, which could include another strike. The MTA chairman says that they will try to reach an agreement with the union before the state answers the arbitration request. Sources say the TWU executive board will meet on January 31.
