MTA Board approves fare, toll increases to take effect in August
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board approved multiple toll increases Wednesday that will go into effect on Aug. 6 and fare increases that will go into effect on Aug. 20.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board approved multiple toll increases Wednesday that will go into effect on Aug. 6 and fare increases that will go into effect on Aug. 20.
The changes for subways, buses and paratransit all include an increase of 15 cents, raising the base fare from $2.75 now to $2.90. The seven-day unlimited ride MetroCard will increase from $33 to $34, and the 30-day unlimited card will increase from $127 to $132.
"Everything is going up, but our paycheck, so what we’re doing is spending money on the MTA," said Parkchester's Corinne Rodriguez. "As a single mom I have to take breakfast to work just to be able to pay them."
The MTA toll increases on bridges such as Whitestone and the Verrazano will be receiving a 5.5% hike.
"I think it’s terrible because we can’t afford a lot of things these days," added Parkchester resident Diane Brownlee. "Food is high clothing is high.
The MTA's current proposal won't include any change in pricing for senior citizens, those that are disabled, student reduced fare, or anyone with a paratransit zero fare discount.
The MTA says the money made will be used to fund operational costs.
