The MTA kicked off a 19-month project today, rehabilitating the upper and lower roadways of the Henry Hudson Bridge.

The bridge connects the Bronx to Manhattan; the upper level carries northbound traffic and the lower carries southbound traffic.

The work will initially close one northbound lane from the Dyckman Street entrance up to the area of the former toll plaza leading to the bridge.
   
In November, it will shift to the southbound lower level, impacting commuters heading into Manhattan. 
   
MTA Bridges and Tunnels officials say the $86 million project will improve the last remaining sections of the 1930s era roadway.  

A signature part of this project will be the removal of columns and toll islands from the old toll plaza, which will hopefully allow for a smoother ride across the bridge.
