A man was fatally shot by MTA police officers Friday night after he fired a submachine gun at officers trying to arrest him for groping and harassing a woman near the Jamaica train station.

MTA Police say the 19-year-old female victim approached officers at the MTAPD Jamaica District Office and reported that a man had grabbed her breasts and blocked her path on the sidewalk outside.

The MTA says police located the suspect – 52-year-old Bashe McDaniel. While officers attempted to arrest him, he pulled out a submachine gun and began shooting.

Authorities say the officers shot back at McDaniel, who was hit and later pronounced dead.

The MTA says this kind of shooting is rare. It is the third deadly shooting by the MTA Police Department in its 26-year history. It is also only the fifth time an MTA officer has fired a weapon in the line of duty. The most recent MTA officer-involved shooting prior to this incident was in 2011.
