The Metropolitan Transit Authority is proposing more price increases for buses, subways, rails and tolls.

This was shared in a board meeting on Wednesday. MTA officials stated that base fare increases have tracked below inflation and that had they gone up with inflation they would be approximately $3.50.

The MTA is currently proposing a base fare of $3 for subways and buses. Reduced-fare tickets for subways and buses would increase from $1.45 to $1.50 per this proposal.

For MTA express bus rides, base fare would increase from $7.00 to $7.25 and reduced-fare rides would increase from $3.50 to $3.60.

The MTA says its next steps include hybrid public hearings on August 19 and 20, feedback sessions at transit hubs in September, and then a vote on the proposed changes in the fall. The organization plans to not only roll out new fare and toll rates by January 2026, but also end the sale of MetroCards by January 2026 as well.

The board also proposed a 4.4% increase in fares for Long Island Railroad and Metro-North tickets, as well as toll increases for local tunnels and bridges.

The following tunnels and bridges would see their toll price rise from $6.94 to $7.46 under the proposal:

  • Robert F. Kennedy Bridge

  • Whitestone Bridge

  • Throgs Neck Bridge

  • Verazzano Bridge

  • Queens-Midtown Tunnel

  • Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

The following bridges would see their toll price rise from $2.60 to $2.80 under the proposal:

  • Marine Parkway Bridge

  • Cross Bay Bridge

The Henry Hudson Bridge would see a toll price increase from $3.18 to $3.42 under the proposal.
