A multiagency enforcement blitz took place on the Whitestone Bridge to catch the worst offenders when it comes to not paying tolls.
The enforcement crackdown is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s ongoing effort to nab flagrant toll violators who have evaded paying their bill after months of notification letters and collection attempts from bridges and tunnels to pay what they owe to the state.
Around two dozen cars were seized, and some of the vehicles had expired or suspended registration. The crackdown also confiscated the license plates that some cars used to avoid detection while passing through the cashless tolls.
NYPD Chief Hildebrand says only about 5% of drivers who use the MTA’s toll roads refuse to pay. A similar crackdown at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge caught 20 drivers who owed a combined $600,000 in evaded tolls and fines.
Officials are urging flagrant violators to work with the agencies to form a payment plan and end their risk of being stopped and having their car seized.
