Officials say Nassau County is ready for phase 2 reopening beginning tomorrow.

As of Tuesday, hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have dropped to a new low of 148 and a total of 33 new cases of the virus were reported in the county.

Phase 2 for the county begins Wednesday with the reopening of offices, real estate, retail, vehicle sales, hair salons and barbershops.

Officials say businesses are ready to reopen, but with specific social distancing and health measures in place.

“As Long Island makes meaningful progress in the fight against COVID-19, I am pushing to accelerate the opening of local malls, they are the anchor of our economy,” says Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

As of now, malls are currently in Phase 4 – but officials in the county believe they should be included with retail.

“We have seen a lot of people out of work. Malls employ thousands and I am concerned some of our malls might not make it to the other side of this pandemic,” says Curran.

In addition, Curran says she is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to allow outdoor sports and practices in county parks to resume for kids.

Lastly, Curran announced that the county has a new partnership with Long Island Cares in the wake of food insecurity due to the coronavirus.

A new food pop-up distribution center will open in Long Beach at the Magnolia Senior Center one day a week for the next six months. The county says it is looking to add more locations throughout the county.
