An early morning fire that started as members of a Belmont family slept has left them homeless.
The fire started around 7 a.m. at the home on Bathgate Avenue. Neighbor Claudette Coles, who was out doing laundry, says she saw the flames and started yelling for the family to wake up.
The family, which includes young children and pets, escaped unharmed. Neighbors gave them sweatshirts and coffee to keep warm. Neighbors also tried to extinguish the flames with water before firefighters arrived.
More than 60 firefighters battled the fire. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
