Neighbors in Belmont are asking the city to step up and say Washington Park is in need of an upgrade.
They say the park is crumbling right beneath their feet.
Scott LaRock Jr. says nothing about Washington Park has changed since he was a kid. “So I had a friend here, break his leg 15 years ago. And it's still here,” said LaRock Jr.
Kevin Martinez says he has even cut down overgrown trees himself so that kids coming out of quarantine had a nice place to stay.
“They got up there with saws, which is not safe, but you have to do something because everybody loves basketball over here,” said Martinez.
News 12 reached out to the Parks Department on Wednesday to see if there were any plans for renovations or upgrades here.
When News 12 showed up Thursday morning, crews were on site. The court was cleaned, hoops were inspected, and playgrounds were painted.
Councilmember Ritchie Torres says his office "reached out to the Bronx Parks Commissioner, arranged for an inspection of the park and a commitment to devise a plan of action to address the safety issues."
