Neighbors want 67-year-old BP gas station moved
Neighbors want a BP gas station on East 149th Street in Mott Haven moved to a more industrial area.
The gas station has been there since 1950, but the city Board of Standards and Appeals held a hearing in Manhattan Tuesday to decide whether it can stay there.
Residents like Harry Bubbins want it gone.
"Zoning does not allow gas stations in this neighborhood unless they get special permission," Bubbins says. "For some reason, they keep getting permission after permission, and we're saying enough is enough."
The gas station is trying to renew its zoning variance with the board so that it can continue operating in the same place. Bubbins wants green space on the lot instead, and he's gained support from Rep. Jose Serrano.
Serrano says the city should only renew the variance if the gas station takes steps to mitigate pollution.
BP says its independent station operators take great pride in being good neighbors.
The Board of Standards and Appeals says it only recently learned of the neighbors' concerns.
