Netflix is testing a new feature that could crack down on password sharing.
Tech expert Lance Ulanoff says many users have been enjoying the streaming service for free.
"According to one study, 37% of Netflix users have shared their credentials with friends and family," Ulanoff says.
He says this may change now that Netflix is running a test in some areas.
"If you shared your login credentials with somebody and they log into Netflix, they might see a message popping in saying, 'you're not at the place where this account lives.' So, maybe you should open your own account," Ulanoff says.
He adds that they aren't forcing users to open new accounts yet, but he thinks that is the end game.
"They're seeing more people that they know are not part of the account and maybe they just felt it was time," he says. "They would much rather have more subscribers, even if it doesn't mean a ton more money for them. They're in a really competitive space right now."
Netflix reported surpassing 200 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of last year.
