New AI safeguards move forward as Connecticut Senate approves child protection bill
The proposal would require AI chatbot companies to detect potential self-harm and disclose when the technology is used in hiring.

Lawmakers in Hartford are moving forward with new efforts to protect children from risks associated with artificial intelligence. The state Senate voted last night to approve sweeping regulations on AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini.
Under the bill, companies operating these platforms would be required to make “reasonable efforts” to detect when users may be considering suicide or other forms of self-harm.
“This is an example of where ‘Move fast and break things,’ which is the Big Tech mantra, has had real-life implications on real people,” said state Sen. James Maroney.
The legislation would also require companies to notify workers if AI is being used in hiring decisions.
The bill now heads to the Connecticut House for consideration.
President Trump has threatened to sue states that pass AI regulations.
